Many motorcyclists use header wrap to either keep the heat away from their leg or just ‘for looks’. Header wrap not only keeps heat away from anything near it it keeps the heat inside the pipes. Header wrap is designed specifically to keep the heat in the header to improve the scavenging of the cylinders. Keeping the heat in keeps the exhaust speed high which is good for performance. The issue is that especially if the motorcycle is running lean the metal of the exhaust can be at near molten or molten temperatures causing the pipe to disintegrate or crack. This typically happens close to the exhaust port / head.
